(what the boys can and can't do)

Morgan
  • can see lights and sees something of bright toys or books in direct sunlight (he smiles)
  • can smile in response to a known voice
  • can giggle in response to being tickled/scratched on his back
  • can open his mouth when he smells food
  • can grasp his fingers around your finger
  • can turn his head towards a sound
  • responds to music by smiling, calming down or going to sleep!
  • loves his Jungle Book and 'Commotion in the Ocean" CDs
  • can communicate pain or tiredness by crying
  • expresses interest by briefly raising one eyebrow (very cute!)
  • has crude control of his legs and to an extent his arms (to press his switch)
  • can't pick up objects or reach out with his hands/arms
  • can't roll, sit, stand, etc.
James
  • can communicate using a few words and Makaton signs
  • can now point with finger to pictures in a book (summer '08)
  • can point with hand to something in the room (summer '08)
  • can push a car across the floor
  • can press buttons and switch toys on
  • can undo clips & zips (not always very helpful!)
  • can walk, run and climb
  • can manage steps holding hands with adult
  • can climb up and down stairs standing up, usingh bannisters and spindles for support
  • can take puzzles apart (e.g. the ones with pegs sticking out)
  • can push/post coins in his piggy bank toy (recent skill for him - toy aimed at 6 months developmentally)
  • can post shapes through a simple shape sorter when the other alternative options are covered
  • can knock over a tower
  • can put objects inside containers
  • can push toy trolley & baby buggy
  • can climb on his trike and propel himself with his feet
  • can take apart Duplo brick model/tower
  • can use a slide with adult support as long as the steps up are solid, not open like a ladder (puts foot through hole!)
  • is now sleeping in a big boy bed after 3 and a half years in a cot!
  • can pretend to feed play food to his toys
  • can't kick a ball
  • can't jump
  • can't balance going up or down a step without support for arms/hand
  • can't put a puzzle together or put peg puzzles into correct holes
  • can't select the correct shape for a shape sorter, unaided
  • can't build a tower
  • can't yet use pedals on his trike
  • can't put Duplo bricks together
  • can't mark-make such as painting or drawing unaided and only holds his interest for seconds!
  • is not toilet trained
