Rude awakening

5.45am

It's Sunday morning. Mo's awake. James is awake. Some nasty little yappy dog down the road is awake. Sharon's awake (rough night). I'm awake (rough back).

There should be laws against this on a Sunday.

Seizure city. :-(

Not a good day for Mo with his seizures today. He was awake from 4.30am and started having seizures around 6am - the kind that don't generally resolve themselves. So for the first time, we administered a half dose of his newly prescribed "rescue remedy". The seizures stopped shortly and he fell asleep, zonked out.

The same happened again at 5pm.

At 8.30pm, the seizures came back, stronger than ever. We took advice from the hospital and administered a third dose of the emergency medicine. Any more and he'll probably have to go down to the ward.

Rescue remedy

A moment finally arrived that we'd not really been looking forward to. We know that a lot of children in Morgan's situation are presecribed "rescue remedies". These are to be used for severe or prolonged seizures and typically stop fitting rapidly. But that comes at a cost - the medicine tends to leave the patient completely zonked.

Mo was bad today and eventually Sharon realised it was going to be necessary to take him to the hospital. So for the first time in a good long while (long for us!) off they went.

He walks!

It has been a long time coming, but this week James has starting walking consistently. We have counted at least 27 steps in a row. It's fantastic to watch.

It was late last year when it was first predicted that James would 'be walking soon'. Funny how things turn out!

Things that go bump in the night

Rumble, rumble. Crash. Thud. Waaaaaaah!!!!

Not what you want to hear at 7am. Yes, James has finally hurled himself out of his cot. We knew it was going to happen sooner or later... Mercifully, he seems to be okay, and bounced back with his characteristic rapidity. That boy must be 50% rubber, easily.

Mo has had an uproariously happy day today. Which is great. Except that it's now 11.45pm, and everything is still hilarious (his view, not mine) and much as his chuckles are making me smile, I would currently give anything for a few yawns right now!

The James Lexicon

Life has been a little busy since the last diary entry. (I write that as if it's a new thing...!) My new job started at the beginning of the month (I'm enjoying it) and we have been preoccupied with one or two things, including "should we stay or should we go" - exactly what do we do about our future accommodation? (Move or extend?)

Op update

Just a brief update: things went well with James' op today. It was a long day for all of us. We left James there overnight, but he's fine apart from being a little sore. We'll pick him up tomorrow. Thanks everyone for your thoughts, prayers and messages.

Errata

Re yesterday's diary entry: ever so sorry - I seem to have lost a day somewhere! (Well I have been ill for over a month...) The operation is scheduled for tomorrow, not today. That said, James has picked up a cold, so we won't find out until tomorrow whether the anaesthetist is still happy for the op to proceed. Watch this space.

New job; an operation; all change

As usual when there's a big gap between diary updates, there's a lot to tell you!

One bit of unwelcome news was me being made redundant early this year. Having made the move away from law only a few months previously, it came as a bit of a blow. But as Sharon immediately pointed out to me, it didn't come as a surprise to God, who has looked after us and seen us through much harder times.

Tackling Social Services...

Sorry for the big gap between updates. There's such a lot going on!

Morgan at last has his educational statement. That means that he is able to start at a local special school later this month. It's excellent news for everyone really - there are fantastic staff and facilities at the school, and we know he will love it there. Also, it will provide some measure of a break for Sharon from the rigours of caring for Mo. He'll initially be going for two days a week, and we'll see how he gets on.
